Return to Oz: purchased. Finally.

I dreamt I was a person who suffered a terrible death. And because of eternal return, I had to live it over and over again. I woke up with tears in my eyes.
What. The. Fuck. Sun, Apr. 20th, 2008, 01:37 pm
I had this amazing dream the other night. I was in a space station living in a dorm-style apartment. And then someone told me I had 30 minutes to gather up what things I could because I was leaving. And I would never be coming back. It was frantic, going through my stuff trying to find my favorite things to keep me occupied for what apparently was the rest of my life. I basically loaded up on books of poetry. But I couldn't find my Faulkner books, try as I might. And I was running out of time. It was really sad but at the same time really cool. I got to live the whole "desert island" thing, where you have to choose your top five records/books/movies, etc. Except frenetically. Right before I woke up, I realized I hadn't picked any music...
Sonic Youth - April 25 in Nashville, TN. Man Man and Yeasayer - May 4 in Chapel Hill. Stars of the Lid - May 5 (!) in Asheville. Instrumental ambient nonstop party! Radiohead (hopefully) May 9, Charlotte. Anyone else going to these? Does anyone want to go see Stars of the Lid with me? I got my ticket but am currently going by my lonesome. Which is going to be amazing, arriving tired and bedraggled the day after the Man Man show and a 3+ hour drive to Asheville and THEN a three+ hour drive back to Albemarle after the show. The drive home, I can see it now: chugging coffee, yelling along with some crazy music to keep from falling asleep. Actually I'm really excited. I need more concerts. Oh, and Caribou was amazing. The opening band had a particularly clever name (Fuck Buttons!); they came across a bit redundant, displaying aspects of Lightning Bolt, Animal Collective and Black Dice (circa 2001, hello elitism!). All in all, even though I was tired as hell during Caribou's set (I've been getting up at 6:30 a.m. these days) it was still amazing.
Called Ticketmaster. The lady to whom I spoke from Ticketmaster Charlotte told me she couldn't do anything from her end until 48 hours before the show. She said customer service might be able to help. Transferred there; next lady (who had a much softer voice) said she couldn't reprint tickets that had already been printed. Go figure. However, she told me I could pick up my ticket at will call the day of the show, provided I have my order information, credit card and photo id.
It seems weird that the problem is so easily remedied. I've used will call before, but never in these circumstances. Why isn't this information on the website? I'm definitely going to call the first lady again 48 hours before the show. I'd rather not get to Charlotte, stand in line at will call only to find out that I will not, in fact, be seeing Radiohead that day.
So, yeah, I guess that's the update.
In other news, Sonic Youth ticket came in and is secured in my dresser. Score. Wed, Mar. 12th, 2008, 10:55 am
I may be stuck in Albemarle for the summer. Not entirely bad, but, it is Albemarle. Wed, Mar. 5th, 2008, 10:22 pm
Getting up at 6 a.m. with Dad to root through the garbage. Because tomorrow is trash day. I swear, for every bank statement I receive in the mail that I don't need...my parents never fail to get me those. I mean, fuck's sake, it's just Radiohead.

Mom might have thrown away my Radiohead ticket... Mon, Mar. 3rd, 2008, 11:10 pm Busy busy busy
My schedule for the next 2 months or so: Raleigh Friday to see friends. Chapel Hill Saturday to see other friends. Built to Spill Monday in Charlotte. Back to Charlotte that weekend to see friends. Work work work a few more weeks. Train train train. Sonic Youth end of April in Nashville (YES!) Radiohead beginning of May in Charlotte. Then hopefully on to grand adventures after all that. I am pleased.
I know I've reached a special place in my life when I am calling my old algebra teacher up on a Saturday night to ask if he wants to "hang out." Yes, I said it. Armed with my curry noodles and chicken, I sat on the floor and offered suggestions for music he should sample on iTunes, or whatever. I don't know how it works; I never use it; in fact, I would go so far as to say I abhor iTunes and everything Apple. Part of it is the fashion to hate Apple; part of it is the fact that I dislike DRM; part of it is the inane ripped quality of iTunes' paid-for downloadables. Botch botch botch: give me a CD, Exact Audio Copy, the LAME encoder and I will be a happy camper. In sum, the old teacher does not like any of my music - warming up slightly only to Arcade Fire. But then again, everyone fucking loves Arcade Fire. Which is OK. He looked at me with horror after playing a ten-second clip of Pig Destroyer, unbelieving of my comment that it gets better, and unbelieving even more the fact that I genuinely like that kind of music. But I have found a limit. And it is called Prurient. Look here. I would link to some of his music, but I don't want anyone vomiting on their computer screens. Needless to say, Prurient makes pure cochlea-shattering noise. Much of it lacking any of sense of musical structure. And don't even think about seeing this guy live without industrial strength earplugs. I read an interesting article about a Prurient show where, upon completion of the set, the venue owner was rushing through the crowd telling everyone to get out immediately because the cops were coming. Someone called in a noise complaint. Now that is hardcore. Me, I like my noise in the context of an actual song. See Sonic Youth's "Silver Rocket" or Animal Collective's "Alvin Row."

I swear, I will have something interesting to say in due time.
Sort of in stasis right now.
It is no good. I've needed to get gone for a long time now. Sun, Feb. 17th, 2008, 10:32 am
The last two books I've read and/or am currently reading (All the King's Men and Catch-22) have been mostly devoid of plot.
I want to read something with a good plot.
